This sweetheart smoothie is a great way to start Valentine’s Day! Especially since it happens to fall on a weekday this year. It’s light and refreshing, and has a nice pink colour from all the strawberries. Top it with some Coconut Whip and you get a pretty sweet treat.
I picked up all my ingredients from one of my favourite stores in Lake Country, Farmer’s Fruit and Produce (@farmersfruitandproduce). They’re usually my first stop on grocery run days because they have just about everything I need. They bring in organic/non-gmo chicken as well as other high-quality meats. They sell dairy products, including vegan-friendly options. Oh, and I get my favourite kombucha and chocolate covered raisins from there… the list goes on! They have quite a bit of vegan/gluten-free/plant-based products so it’s fun to see what’s new that I can try out. This Sweetheart Smoothie is delicious and a perfect way to treat your loved ones. I used a freshly squeezed navel orange for a light flavour, but you could easily just use bottled orange juice for a stronger flavour, and less work. We also find the more red and juicy the strawberries are, the better tasting the smoothie is. The coconut whipped topping adds some sweetness as it melts down into the glass. And my last note is that we tend to like our smoothies on the thin side, but if you prefer a thicker smoothie just add less water. Okay, here’s the recipe:
Makes: 2 large glasses
- 1 ½ cup Sliced Frozen Strawberries
- 1 Medium Frozen Banana
- Fresh Squeezed Juice from 1 Large Navel Orange (about a generous ½ cup)
- 2 tbsp Hemp Hearts
- 1 cup Cold Water
- ½ cup Ice Cubes
- Coconut Whipped Topping
Place 1 cup of the strawberries, banana, orange juice, hemp hearts, and water into a blender. Blend until smooth, adding more or less water to get desired thickness. Add in the last ½ cup of the strawberries and the ice cubes, blend again until incorporated (this will give some nice strawberry chunks throughout and the ice will keep the smoothie cold). Pour into a couple large glasses and top with Coconut Whipped Topping (which will provide more sweetness as it melts down).
Tip: Have an entire frozen banana with the peel still on? Put it in a bowl and run some hot water over the frozen banana for about a minute. Then cut the edges off and you should be able to slide it right out of the skin.
